World AIDS Day

  • Use a condom- a lot of people opt for birth control instead of condoms because pregnancy remains the main concern but condoms offer protection against pregnancy and STD's. Condoms are a lot cheaper than children and that AIDS medication, which can be up to $8,000 a month. Who has $8,000 a month to spend on quality medication?
  • Know the person you're sleeping with- this may seem remedial but too many people are hopping in the sack with people they don't know. The crazy thing is they're hopping in the sack without protection. If you're going to share your body, at least share some of your mind. What is their middle name? What do they do for a living? Their parents name? Where do they live? Where are they from? What do they do for fun? Are they in a relationship? I'm not talking about deep questions, just deep enough that if something goes wrong you have enough information to find this person.
  • Get tested- with all things, the sooner you know the sooner you can fix it. The sooner you know you have AIDS, the sooner you can do something about it. Too many people are afraid of their status, so they put off being tested but the later you find you have HIV/AIDS, the harder it will be to treat it.
  • Take someone with you to be tested- this person doesn't have to be your significant other but anyone you want to give support to. Having a friend can make getting tested and hearing the results less daunting.
